| Journalist and environmental activist Grigory Pasko has been convicted of 'intending to pass to foreign media information that would have weakened the battle readiness of the Pacific Fleet' Although the earlier charges of treason and espionage have been dropped he has been sentenced to 4 years in a labour camp. In 1993 Pasko filmed a Russian navy tanker dumping radioactive waste and ammunition in the Sea of Japan. Amnesty International has declared the sentence a violation of his right to freedom of expression and has adopted him as a prisoner of conscience. |
