| Surkov, the deputy head of President Putin's administration, met with representatives of WWF, Greenpeace and the Socio-Ecologial Union (SEU) to hear complaints that the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) is not capable of fulfilling the functions of the former State Environmental Committee effectively. Surkov has offered to give the MNR 3 months to try to solve the most serious problems and, if those attempts fail to prevent pollution increases and embezzlement of natural resources, he has promised a restructuring of Russia's environmental management. |
