Yukon Backtrack

After only 3 months in power the new Yukon government is backing off from 10 years of work on the Yukon Protected Areas Strategy, effectively calling a halt to protection of wilderness in the territory. The Protected Areas Strategy is part of a national agreement made in 1992 where each Canadian province and territory committed to completing a network of representative protected areas. The Yukon is the only jurisdiction in Canada to cancel work on protected areas thus turning its back on long-standing national commitments to protect wilderness, biodiversity and wildlife. The Yukon is home to some of Canada’s largest woodland and barren ground caribou herds, hosts healthy populations of grizzly bears and wolves, and still has vast areas of intact mountain landscapes and free-flowing wild rivers.
