| So far this year 100,000 ha of forest has been hit by fires in Russia, compared with 500,000 ha burned by this time last year. A dedicated police unit, known as the forest police, has been established in Irkutsk Region as a pilot project to try to crack down on negligence and deliberate fire-raising. If successful it will be extended to other regions. |
